Week of Jan 12th

Thank you to all for a wonderful first race weekend!

It's not easy to jump into a long and steep slalom course with no training beforehand, but our team took it all in stride and did a great job! We're super proud of all of you for your skiing this weekend!

I think we're the only league who has managed to start our race season, so pat yourselves on the back - thank you to all volunteers and chaperones for helping us make this race happen!

Timberline is OPEN. Skibowl is (PROBABLY) OPEN. See the information below regarding on snow training at Skibowl for Thursday evening.

This is a reminder that PRACTICES AND RACES ARE MANDATORY, unless otherwise specified or excused by Marina (or require unusually long travel like Anthony Lakes did). If you are unsure what is considered an excused absence, please refer to the team policies and let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Other events this week:

  • None. Get some rest, study for finals, and eat healthy so you feel good heading into finals week which is almost here!

For Athletes:

  • A lot of athletes have been getting sick. Get good rest, study for finals, and eat well so you all stay healthy heading into your race season and finals week which is fast approaching!

    • Remember that you're responsible for being at practice. Homework should not interfere with this - please practice good time management and talk to Kirstan or Marina if you need tips/tricks for time management or studying.

    • Rest and exercise are good for your brain! So dryland and sleep are both very important parts of your routine, especially in these next couple of weeks. Support this with a healthy, balanced diet.

  • Friday Race 2 at Meadows: Our second race is scheduled for Friday 1/16 at Meadows. I need everyone to RSVP no later than 8pm Monday 1/12 so I can create a race order. Please make sure your slalom gear is packed and ready prior to Thursday so you can come home Thursday night and get a good night's sleep before getting up to head to the race. This race will use carpool to transport athletes to Meadows and back to Portland. Use the buttons below to RSVP and to access the carpool for Friday:

  • On snow training this week: We have two training days on the calendar - Thursday 1/15 and Saturday 1/17. Please make sure you read an understand the information below:

    • Thursday training:

      • Bring your gear to school and store in the visiting team locker room.

      • The bus departs SMA at 3:30 SHARP. If you are not on the bus on time, you risk missing it. Please pack a snack so you can gather your belongings and head straight to the bus after school. Once on board, do not leave the bus. You will be checked in by a team captain or parent chaperone and are expected to remain on the bus from that point forward. The bus is well-equipped for doing homework if you'd like to use your time productively. Please bring headphones if you need to do anything that requires volume. I recommend downloading anything you need for homework ahead of time. Bus wifi should work, but don't rely on it.

      • We'll ski 5-7:30pm, then you'll load back onto the bus and head back to SMA, where your parents can pick you up around 9pm.

      • Skibowl has very thin base - they are doing their best to stay open this week, but with warm temperatures forecasted, there is a potential plans will change. Please keep an eye on Remind for any changes.

      • Please RSVP no later than 8pm Wednesday so I can generate the attendance list for our chaperone.

  • Saturday training:

    • We are hopeful we'll be able to set a course, but have not heard yet. We will be working on GS skills/drills or running a GS course, so please bring the equipment you'll use for GS this year.

    • You should remove your jaw guard from your helmet after Friday's race.

    • Details for Saturday (schedule, etc) will come via Remind as we get closer.

    • Please use the button below to sign up for carpool for Saturday.

For Parents:

  • Mt Hood League Waiver: Please complete the league waiver. This is for athletes, coaches, and volunteers. It's available on the Mt Hood League website as well.

    https://forms.gle/9pMhCwy7zaJ2mX9N7

  • Sweatshirts: If you ordered a team sweatshirt, they will be distributed at dryland on Tuesday. Additional sweatshirts (beyond the athlete) were $30 each, as mentioned before. To pay for your sweatshirt, you can pay me directly via Venmo, Zelle, or bring me cash if that's your preference. Let me know if the QR codes give you any trouble!

  • On snow training (Thursday): This practice is currently a go. It's bus transport. Athletes will leave from SMA after school and you will be able to pick them up when they return to SMA at about 9pm. We may try to get them on the road earlier this week due to having a race Friday morning. We send the bus' ETA to SMA once their on the road. Roads should be clear this week, so I don't expect it to be a long travel time back to Portland.

  • Race 2 - Slalom at Meadows (Friday): We will be using carpool and will need parent volunteers for Friday's race. Please use the SignUp Genius on the For Parents page on the website to volunteer on race day. The lots filled early at Meadows this Friday, so plan an early departure from Portland Friday morning. Use the button below to add your car to the Friday carpool.

  • On snow training (Saturday): This practice will be at Timberline. With the mountain open, lots are filling and traffic is worse, so please plan to leave Portland early and give yourself plenty of time for both the morning and afternoon commutes. You should plan to be in the lot at Timberline no later than 8:15 to avoid getting turned away at the bottom of Timberline Rd. Use the button below to add your car to the Saturday carpool.

  • Race 3 - GS at Skibowl (Monday): This race has been CANCELED. We are giving athletes the day off to prepare for finals and to allow parents time off from driving up and down the mountain. :)

Details for a make up plan for this race will be coming...hopefully sooner rather than later.
