Week of Dec 15th

Thanks for an amazing weekend of team building with a side of nature - hopefully you've all recovered from the hike and overnight excitement. It's time to get through your last week before winter break - lots going on, so make sure you read all of the info below to stay up to date!

Thanks to all of you for your patience and flexibility as we deal with this suboptimal start to the season. They always say "good things come to those who wait," so let's hope this slow start means that Mother Nature has something great in store for us this winter!

Heads Up: Please see the notes regarding this weekend's scheduled on snow practice. The weather is still not cooperating. As with the past weeks, final plans will be released Wednesday, but see notes below for more information.

Other events this week:

  • Team Bonding: The team is invited to head to Voicebox Karaoke (2112 NW Hoyt) following Thursday evening's dryland training (6:15-8:15pm). A light snack will be provided to athletes. We will use parent carpool for this. Use the link below to sign up to drive (PARENTS) or find a spot to ride (ATHLETES). Parents will pick up athletes at SMA at 5:30 and take them to Voicebox. Parents should plan to pick up athletes from Voicebox at 8:15, unless plans are made otherwise.

For Athletes:

  • On Snow Training: This Saturday's On Snow Training is currently tentative. Sunday and Monday are CANCELED. If something crazy happens and we get snow, we will ski Saturday and Sunday, but Monday is canceled with the bus company already. TIMBERLINE IS NOT CURRENTLY OPEN AND ON SNOW PRACTICE IS DEPENDENT ON THEIR OPERATIONS. WE WILL DO AN ALTERNATE ACTIVITY ON SATURDAY - DETAILS TO COME ON WEDNESDAY. Keep an eye on Remind for the updated information.

Use the link below to sign up for a spot in the carpool for Saturday.

For Parents:

  • OISRA Registration: The final list of registered athletes is currently missing 6 of our athletes. I will be sending a Remind message to anyone whose athlete is not registered. Please do so ASAP. The deadline was Dec 6th, so pricing may have increased for late registrations.

  • Mt Hood League Waiver: Please complete the league waiver. This is for athletes, coaches, and volunteers. It's available on the Mt Hood League website as well.

  • Saturday 12/20 Carpool Signup: Use the link below to sign up to participate in Saturday's carpool as a driver. Please note that this practice is currently an alternate activity rather than skiing, but it is still considered a mandatory practice for anyone who is not traveling for the holidays. Timberline is not currently open for skiing, and although the temperatures look like they'll drop this week, I don't expect that they'll be opening this weekend. I'm keeping an eye on things. I will send out final details for Saturday on Wednesday. Keep an eye on Remind for the updated information and alternate plans.

Planning for the next few weeks:

  • Anthony Lakes: As far as we know, this race is still happening so we should move forward with the intention of traveling to eastern Oregon Jan 9-10.

    • If you are traveling as a solo athlete in a carpool or a parent chaperone (no extra siblings, etc): The team has booked a block of rooms for athletes, coaches, and parent chaperones at the Best Western in Baker City. These are double queen rooms and beds will be filled, meaning parent chaperones will share with their athlete or with another same sex parent chaperone - TBD. This will be a discussion as we get closer to traveling.

    • If you are traveling as a family to Anthony Lakes, we cannot cover the cost of lodging for your entire family, but I did get a group rate that you can use. Follow the link below to take advantage of our group rate at the Best Western in Baker City (Check the other available rates too, just to be sure you're getting the best deal).

  • Winter Break Camp: As of now, with the lack of snow, we are all anxiously crossing our fingers and toes that we'll get to ski. Dates on the calendar are as follows, with all training dates at Timberline:

    • Sat 12/20 - Alternate activity - Details TBA

    • Sun 12/21 - CANCELED (unless we get dumped on and they open)

    • Mon 12/22 - CANCELED

    • Sat 12/27 - OPTIONAL On snow training - GS (pending snow)

    • Sun 12/28 - OPTIONAL On snow training - GS (pending snow)

    • Fri 1/2 - KELSEY RACE (Meadows) - GS (pending snow)

    • Sat 1/3 - On snow training - Slalom (pending snow)

    • Sun 1/4 - On snow training - Slalom (pending snow)

  • January & February: When we return from winter break, we are scheduled to begin Thursday night training at Skibowl, where athletes will take the bus from SMA after school, train 5-8pm(ish), then return to SMA on the bus. If we need to pivot, we will announce changes to plans as far in advance as possible, but keeping with the theme of the season - please plan to be flexible as we get into the busiest portion of our season when we start racing.

    • Optional training days are on the calendar and it's always recommended that athletes take advantage of those whenever possible, especially since we've missed out on all of our early season skiing at this point.
